France Paris Hotel des Invalides Entry Tickets Overview
The Hotel des Invalides at 129 Rue de Grenelle in the 7th arrondissement is one of the defining monuments of French history. Commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670 to provide a home and hospital for wounded soldiers, it was designed as a vast complex combining a military residence, a church and a barracks. The golden dome of the Eglise du Dome is one of the most recognisable features of the Paris skyline.
The Army Museum holds one of the most important military history collections in the world with over 500000 objects. The permanent collection covers French military history from prehistory to the present day, including medieval armour, Napoleonic uniforms and weapons, World War material and a notable concentration of personal items belonging to Napoleon Bonaparte.
The Eglise du Dome was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and is a masterpiece of 17th-century French baroque architecture. Napoleon's tomb was installed here in 1861 in a sarcophagus of polished red quartzite in a circular crypt. The Museum of the Order of Liberation documents the Resistance order founded by Charles de Gaulle in 1940. Open daily 10 am to 6 pm with a late opening on the first Friday of each month until 10 pm.
