Greece Athens Acropolis Museum Entry Tickets Overview
Opened in 2009 at the foot of the Acropolis on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, the Acropolis Museum is one of the great museum buildings of the 21st century and an extraordinary repository of the treasures recovered from the sacred rock over 200 years of archaeological investigation. Designed by Swiss-American architect Bernard Tschumi and built above an active archaeological excavation, the museum is itself a work of art, its glass floors revealing ancient Athenian neighbourhoods beneath visitors' feet as they walk through the galleries.
The museum's three main levels correspond to the three zones of the Acropolis itself. The ground floor galleries display finds from the slopes and approaches to the sacred rock. The middle floors house the magnificent Archaic sculptures including the extraordinary Peplos Kore and other votive offerings from before the Persian Wars. At the top, the Parthenon Gallery is the museum's most spectacular space: an entire floor dedicated to the surviving sculpture of the Parthenon, oriented to match the temple's actual alignment visible through the vast panoramic windows above.
The museum is also the focal point of the campaign for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, with plaster casts marking the positions of those sculptures still held in the British Museum in London. A visit here makes the case for their return more powerfully than any argument. Book your Acropolis Museum tickets now and experience the most important collection of classical Greek art in the world.

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough and relaxed visit to the Acropolis Museum covering all three main gallery levels. Art lovers and history enthusiasts can easily spend 3 hours or more. The Parthenon Gallery at the top is the most time-consuming and rewarding space. The museum restaurant and terrace are recommended for a break, particularly on Friday evenings when the restaurant stays open until 22:00 with views of the illuminated Acropolis.
The Acropolis Museum is located at Dionysiou Areopagitou 15, Athens. The nearest Metro station is Akropoli on Line 2 (Red Line), approximately a 2-minute walk from the museum entrance. The museum is also the nearest major landmark to the south entrance of the Acropolis archaeological site, making it an ideal starting or finishing point for a combined Acropolis and museum visit.
Yes. The Acropolis Museum is an excellent destination for families and considerably less physically demanding than the archaeological site on the hill above. The glass floors revealing ancient excavations beneath are particularly fascinating for children. The museum's open spaces and well-lit galleries make it comfortable for families. Children under 6 enter free. The museum restaurant and terrace provide a welcome break point during the visit.
Yes. Since April 2025 when the combined ticket system was restructured, the Acropolis Museum requires its own separate admission ticket from the Acropolis archaeological site. Visitors wishing to see both the site and the museum must purchase two separate tickets. Both can be purchased online in advance and combining both on the same day is the most rewarding approach to understanding ancient Athens.
The Parthenon Gallery occupies the entire top floor of the Acropolis Museum and is its most spectacular space. It houses the surviving sculptural decoration of the Parthenon including frieze blocks, metopes, and pedimental figures arranged along a continuous display track oriented to match the actual alignment of the Parthenon, which is visible through the panoramic glass walls above. Plaster casts mark the positions of sculptures currently held in the British Museum.
The Acropolis Museum was built in part to make the case for the return of the Parthenon Marbles, the sculptures removed from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century and now held in the British Museum in London. The museum's Parthenon Gallery uses plaster casts to mark the positions of the missing sculptures, demonstrating visually what the complete frieze would look like reunited. Greece has campaigned for their return for decades.
In summer from April to October the Acropolis Museum is open Monday from 09:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 20:00, and on Fridays with extended hours until 22:00. In winter from November to March the museum is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The museum is closed on 1 January, 25 March, Orthodox Easter Sunday, 1 May, and 25 December.
The Caryatids are six sculpted female figures that served as columns supporting the south porch of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis. Five of the original six are displayed in a dedicated gallery on the second floor of the museum, where visitors can admire them at close quarters. The sixth Caryatid is in the British Museum in London. The figures on the Erechtheion itself are high-quality replicas made to protect the originals from pollution.
