Before there was the Taj Mahal, there was Humayun's Tomb. Commissioned in 1565 by the Mughal empress Bega Begum and completed in 1572, this was the first garden-tomb ever built in India - and its influence on the architecture that followed is impossible to overstate.
Rising 47 metres above a perfectly symmetrical Persian Char Bagh garden, the tomb's white marble double dome and red sandstone facade set the template that Emperor Shah Jahan would refine into the Taj Mahal nearly a century later. Standing in the central garden and looking up at the main tomb, the connection is unmistakable and extraordinary.
Beyond the main tomb, the complex is surprisingly rich - the pre-Mughal Tomb of Isa Khan, the Arab Serai housing for Persian craftsmen, the Afsarwala Tomb and Mosque, and the quiet Nila Gumbad are all within the walled enclosure. Unlike many of Delhi's headline monuments, Humayun's Tomb rarely feels overcrowded. The atmosphere is calm, the gardens are immaculate, and the light on the red sandstone in the late afternoon is unlike anywhere else in the city.

Yes. The garden complex is open and spacious and children under 15 enter free. Paths are mostly level and walkable. The main tomb involves a steep staircase with no lift. The site is engaging and educational for all ages.
Early morning from 6:00 AM is ideal - the light is exceptional and the gardens are calm before tour groups arrive. Late afternoon before 5:00 PM also offers beautiful golden light on the red sandstone facade.
The nearest metro station is Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on the Violet Line, approximately 1.6 km from the main entrance. Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are readily available at the station. App-based cabs also drop directly at the entrance.
