Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi was inaugurated in November 2005 by the BAPS organisation under the guidance of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The complex covers over 100 acres on the eastern bank of the Yamuna River and is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest comprehensive Hindu temple complex. The central monument stands 141 feet tall and 356 feet wide and was built by 11000 artisans and volunteers from pink Rajasthan sandstone and Italian Carrara marble with no ferrous metal of any kind in its structure.
The central mandir features 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 domes and over 20000 sculptures of deities, sadhus, devotees and animals. The base of the monument is ringed by 148 life-sized elephants carved from single blocks of stone. Inside the central shrine the principal murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan stands 11 feet tall in gold. The complex is a tribute to Bhagwan Swaminarayan who lived from 1781 to 1830 and is venerated within the BAPS tradition.
The exhibitions include Sahajanand Darshan, an audio-animatronic display, Neelkanth Darshan, a large-format film on Swaminarayan's journey across India, and the Cultural Boat Ride through 10000 years of Indian civilisation. The Sahaj Anand Water Show runs in the evenings. The complex is closed every Monday.

The Sahaj Anand Water Show is an evening spectacular combining water jets, fire, projections, music and storytelling to narrate a message drawn from Indian philosophy. It runs for approximately 24 minutes in the outdoor amphitheatre. It is a separately ticketed experience.
Visitors must wear modest clothing covering the shoulders and legs. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not permitted. A cloakroom facility is available at the entrance for items that cannot be carried inside.
Take the Delhi Metro Blue Line to Akshardham station, approximately five minutes walk from the main entrance. By road it is accessible from the National Highway 24 via Vikas Marg. Auto-rickshaws and app cabs are available from central Delhi.
Entry to the main temple mandir and the gardens and grounds is included with the standard admission. The cultural exhibitions including Sahajanand Darshan, Neelkanth Darshan and the Cultural Boat Ride are separately ticketed experiences within the complex.
