Italy Florance Saint Mark's Basilica Entry Tickets Overview
Standing at the eastern end of Piazza San Marco, Saint Mark's Basilica is Venice's most iconic building and one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture anywhere in the world. Built originally in 829 AD to house the stolen relics of Saint Mark brought from Alexandria, and rebuilt in its current form between 1063 and 1094, the basilica grew over the following centuries into a glittering treasury of gold mosaics, marble columns, and Byzantine icons accumulated from Venice's far-reaching maritime empire.
The interior is overwhelming in its beauty. Over 8000 square metres of gold mosaic cover every surface of the five domed ceiling, depicting biblical scenes and the life of Saint Mark in extraordinary detail. The Pala d'Oro, the golden altarpiece studded with over 2000 precious stones and enamel panels, is one of the greatest works of Byzantine goldsmiths' art in existence. The four bronze horses above the main entrance, originals of which are displayed in the Museo Marciano inside, were plundered from Constantinople in 1204 during the Fourth Crusade.
Since July 2025 all tickets must be purchased online as there are no longer any ticket offices at the basilica. Book your skip the line Saint Mark's Basilica Venice tickets in advance and guarantee your entry to one of the world's most extraordinary sacred and artistic treasures.
