St Mark's Basilica is the church of the Doge of Venice, built to house the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist brought from Alexandria in 828 AD. The current building was substantially constructed in the 11th century and expanded and decorated continuously through the 13th and 15th centuries. It represents the most significant Byzantine religious building in Western Europe and the point at which Byzantine, Islamic and Gothic architectural traditions met and merged in one of the most complex and beautiful buildings ever created.
The interior mosaics cover 8000 square metres of wall and ceiling surface. Gold tessera backgrounds unite the entire space into a continuous golden field against which biblical and hagiographic narratives unfold across every vault and apse. The Pala d'Oro behind the high altar is a golden altarpiece encrusted with enamel panels and precious stones assembled over several centuries, one of the most extraordinary examples of Byzantine decorative art in existence. The Treasury holds relics, vessels and objects brought from Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade of 1204.
Access is via timed entry reservation, strongly recommended to avoid waits of up to two hours. The Museo Marciano in the upper gallery gives access to the original bronze horses and views down into the golden interior from above.

St Mark's Basilica is generally open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5 pm. On Sundays the basilica is reserved for religious services until early afternoon and tourist access begins from approximately 2 pm. Hours can vary seasonally and on religious feast days so check the official basilica website before your visit.
The basilica is free to enter but timed entry reservations for a specific morning slot are strongly recommended and available online. Walk-in queues in September regularly reach one to two hours. Reserving a slot eliminates the queue. Separate tickets are needed for the Museo Marciano, Pala d'Oro and Treasury.
The Pala d'Oro is the golden altarpiece behind the high altar of St Mark's Basilica. It is composed of over 250 enamel panels and is set with pearls, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Assembled between the 10th and 14th centuries, it is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine decorative craftsmanship in the world.
