Built around 125 AD under Emperor Hadrian on the site of an earlier temple, the Pantheon is one of Rome's most astonishing gifts to the world. Originally constructed as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome, it was converted into a Christian church in 609 AD, a transformation that almost certainly saved it from the quarrying and demolition that destroyed every other major pagan monument in the city. Today, nearly 1900 years after its completion, the Pantheon remains structurally intact and in continuous use.
The engineering achievement at the heart of the Pantheon is its extraordinary dome, 43 metres in diameter and still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. At its apex sits the oculus, a 9-metre open hole in the ceiling that serves as the building's only source of light, casting a moving beam across the interior as the sun tracks overhead. On clear days the effect is simply breathtaking.

The Pantheon's dome measures 43 metres in diameter, the same as its interior height, making it a perfect sphere. It remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world nearly 1900 years after its construction. No modern architect has fully replicated the techniques used by the Romans to build it and it has directly inspired countless buildings including the United States Capitol and the Florence Cathedral.
The Pantheon is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:30. On Sundays hours are 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30. The Pantheon is closed on 1 January, 15 August (Ferragosto), and 25 December. Hours may also vary around major religious services and celebrations.

Most visitors spend between 30 and 60 minutes inside the Pantheon. The building is compact but extraordinarily rich in detail and history. Allow more time if you wish to quietly observe the oculus light effect which moves slowly across the interior throughout the day.
No. Since July 2023 a paid entry ticket is required for all visitors. The standard adult ticket costs €5 until June 2026 rising to €7 from 1 July 2026. Children under 18 enter free regardless of nationality. The first Sunday of each month is free for all visitors but attracts very large queues and is not recommended for a relaxed visit.
The Pantheon is located in Piazza della Rotonda in central Rome. The nearest Metro station is Barberini on Line A, approximately 700 metres away. Buses 40, 64, and 70 stop at Largo di Torre Argentina about 400 metres from the entrance. The Pantheon is also easily walkable from the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the historic centre.
The Pantheon is the burial site of the Renaissance artist Raphael, who died in 1520 and requested to be buried here. It also contains the tombs of two Italian kings, Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I. Visiting their tombs is included in the standard entry ticket.
