Italy Venice Saint Mark's Basilica Entry Tickets Overview
Rising in extraordinary Byzantine splendour above the eastern end of Piazza San Marco, Saint Mark's Basilica is the most ornate and most visited church in Venice and one of the greatest examples of Byzantine architecture in the western world. Founded in 828 to house the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist, which had been brought from Alexandria by Venetian merchants in an act of sacred theft that would define the city's religious identity for centuries, the current building was constructed from 1063 onwards and consecrated in 1094. Over the following centuries it was progressively enriched with mosaics, marbles, sculptures, and treasures looted from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade of 1204, making it the most lavishly decorated church building in Christendom.
The interior of Saint Mark's is unlike any other church in Europe. Over 8,000 square metres of gold mosaics cover the domes, vaults, arches, and walls in an unbroken shimmering carpet of Biblical narrative that envelops visitors in a world entirely gilded in divine gold. The domes depict the Ascension, the Pentecost, and scenes from the life of Saint Mark. The narrative cycle of mosaics, created between the 11th and 14th centuries, is the largest and most complete early medieval mosaic programme in the world. The unique quality of the light as it filters through the alabaster windows and reflects off the gold tesserae changes with the time of day, making each visit a different experience.
The Pala d'Oro, the golden altarpiece behind the high altar, is one of the supreme works of medieval goldsmithing, set with over 2,000 precious stones. The Museum on the upper level houses the original bronze Horses of Saint Mark, the ancient Greek originals removed from Constantinople in 1204. Since July 2025 all tickets must be purchased online as there are no on-site ticket offices.

FAQs
The Horses of Saint Mark are four ancient bronze horses displayed in the Museo di San Marco on the upper level of the Basilica. Originally cast in ancient Greece or Rome, they were removed from the Hippodrome of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204 and brought to Venice as war trophies. The horses on the façade of the Basilica are high-quality 20th century replicas. The originals were moved inside in 1981 to protect them from pollution and are among the most extraordinary surviving works of ancient bronze sculpture.
Beyond the standard admission to the Basilica interior several additional areas require separate tickets. The Pala d'Oro, the breathtaking golden altarpiece, requires a supplement. The Museum and Loggia dei Cavalli featuring the original bronze Horses of Saint Mark and stunning views over the piazza also requires a supplement. The Treasury housing Byzantine sacred objects looted from Constantinople is separately ticketed. A full ticket covering the Basilica, Pala d'Oro, and Museum offers the best value for a comprehensive visit.
