Japan Osaka Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan Entry Tickets Overview

Opened in July 1990 at Tempozan Harbour Village on the waterfront of Osaka Bay in Minato Ward, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan was conceived around a single idea so distinctive that it has never been replicated in quite the same way anywhere in the world. Rather than moving visitors past tanks at ground level, Kaiyukan takes guests by escalator to the 8th floor and then leads them on a continuous spiralling descent around one colossal central tank, the Pacific Ocean tank, which holds 5,400 tonnes of water and rises 9 metres deep through the heart of the building. As you spiral down through 14 distinct marine habitat zones, you encounter the same central tank from progressively greater depths, meeting the whale sharks at eye level somewhere in the middle and watching them glide past in slow, unhurried arcs through the deep blue water.

The 14 zones correspond to actual geographical regions surrounding the Pacific Ocean, arranged geographically so that your descent is simultaneously a journey around the Ring of Fire. From the Japan Forest with its waterfall and lush vegetation on the upper floors, through the Great Barrier Reef, the Aleutian Islands, the coast of Ecuador, the Antarctic and Arctic zones, to the deep Pacific Ocean at the bottom, each habitat is reproduced with extraordinary attention to authentic conditions. The collection includes two whale sharks, manta rays, giant Japanese spider crabs with leg spans approaching 4 metres, ocean sunfish (mola mola), California sea lions, sea otters, ringed seals, penguins, and jellyfish illuminated in the dedicated Jellyfish Galaxy tank.

FAQs

1What animals can I see at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan?

Kaiyukan houses over 30,000 creatures from 620 species. Highlights include two whale sharks in the central Pacific Ocean tank, manta rays, California sea lions, sea otters, ringed seals, Antarctic penguins, giant Japanese spider crabs with leg spans approaching 4 metres, ocean sunfish (mola mola), and the dedicated Jellyfish Galaxy display. The collection spans 14 Pacific Rim habitat zones from the Japan Forest and Great Barrier Reef to the Antarctic and Arctic zones.

2Is Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan suitable for families with young children?

Yes, Kaiyukan is one of the finest family attractions in Osaka and the spiral descent design is stroller-friendly throughout most of the route. Children under 4 enter free. Baby care rooms with nursing booths, children's toilets, and diaper-changing facilities are available. Free wheelchair hire is available at the information counter with advance notice. The whale sharks, sea otters, and Jellyfish Galaxy display are consistently the most captivating exhibits for younger visitors.

3When does whale shark feeding take place at Kaiyukan?

Whale shark feeding at Kaiyukan takes place twice daily at approximately 10:20 and again at approximately 15:00. Times may vary depending on the condition of the animals so checking the feeding schedule board at the entrance on the day of your visit is recommended. For an exclusive behind-the-scenes feeding view from above the tank, a Premium Tour is available at a supplement, bookable by phone in advance with strictly limited capacity.

4How long should I spend at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan?

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough self-guided visit through all 14 marine zones following the spiral route. Visitors who want to catch both daily whale shark feedings and experience the Sea at Night atmospheric lighting transformation from 17:00 should plan for a longer half-day visit. Same-day re-entry is permitted until one hour before closing, making it practical to leave for lunch at Tempozan Marketplace and return in the afternoon.

5What makes the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan different from other aquariums?

Kaiyukan's defining feature is its spiral descent design. Rather than walking past tanks at ground level, visitors ride an escalator to the 8th floor and then follow a continuous spiralling ramp downward around one colossal central Pacific Ocean tank holding 5,400 tonnes of water. The same tank is encountered again at progressively greater depths on each pass through, creating a journey from the ocean surface down to the deep sea and giving every level a genuinely different perspective on the same marine world.

6How do I get to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan?

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is located at 1-1-10 Kaigandori, Minato Ward, Osaka, within the Tempozan Harbour Village. The most convenient connection is Osakako Station on the Osaka Metro Chuo Line, approximately a 5-minute walk from the aquarium. From Osaka Station, the journey via the JR Loop Line to Bentencho and transfer to the Chuo Line takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes.

7What is the Sea at Night experience at Kaiyukan?

From approximately 17:00 each day the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan transitions into Sea at Night mode, with dramatically changed atmospheric lighting and a sound environment throughout the facility that transforms the daytime experience into something considerably more intimate and cinematic. The whale sharks and manta rays in the central tank take on an entirely different character in the blue-tinted low light. Entering at 16:00 allows visitors to experience both the daytime and evening versions of the aquarium in a single visit.

8What else is near Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan?

Kaiyukan sits within the Tempozan Harbour Village on the Osaka Bay waterfront. Immediately adjacent attractions include the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel, the Santa Maria sailing ship cruise, the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Osaka, and the large Tempozan Marketplace shopping and dining complex. Combo tickets combining Kaiyukan with the Ferris Wheel are available and represent good value for visitors planning a full day at the bay front.
