Japan Osaka Umeda Sky Building Entry Tickets Overview
Completed in 1993 in the Kita Ward of Osaka and designed by the architect Hiroshi Hara, who also designed Kyoto Station, the Umeda Sky Building is one of the most distinctive and celebrated skyscrapers in Japan. Unlike conventional tower buildings, the Sky Building consists of two separate 40-storey towers that are connected at the top by the Kuchu Teien Observatory, an observation facility that spans the 39th and 40th floors and the open-air rooftop in a ring-shaped structure that gives the impression of a floating circular garden suspended 173 metres above the street. The building's exterior is clad in approximately 17,000 half-mirrored glass panels that reflect the sky and surrounding cityscape, creating the distinctive silvery appearance that makes it immediately recognisable from across Osaka.
The observation experience is reached by a sequence that is itself part of the attraction. From the 35th floor, a dramatic see-through escalator rises through the gap between the two towers to the 39th floor, providing an extraordinary sensation of ascending through open air between two vast glass surfaces. The 39th floor ticket counter and indoor gallery lead to the 40th floor observatory, which features a 35-metre glass counter café where visitors can sit apparently floating above the city. Above this, the rooftop open-air observation deck delivers the complete 360-degree panorama with no glass barrier between the visitor and the Osaka skyline.
The rooftop is celebrated for one of Japan's Top 100 Sunsets, with the view to the west over Osaka Bay and the Yodo River particularly spectacular during the magic hour as the city transitions from golden daylight to illuminated night.

The Heart Lock is a popular romantic tradition at the Umeda Sky Building's Floating Garden Observatory. Visitors can engrave a heart-shaped padlock with names and a date and attach it to a dedicated fence on the rooftop observation level, creating a lasting keepsake of the visit. The Heart Lock must be purchased in advance as part of an online ticket combination and is not available as a walk-up purchase at the rooftop. A combined ticket with the Heart Lock and observatory admission is available online.
The most spectacular visit time is approximately 30 to 60 minutes before sunset, known as the magic hour, when the sky transitions from golden afternoon light through deep blue to the full illuminated night panorama of Osaka. Sunset in Osaka varies from approximately 16:30 in December to 19:00 in late June and July. For those who prefer fewer visitors, a daytime morning visit offers the clearest visibility of distant landmarks. Evening visits after 20:00 offer the full illuminated city view with shorter queues.
The see-through escalator is one of the most distinctive features of the Umeda Sky Building experience. It rises from the 35th floor through the open gap between the two towers up to the 39th floor observation level, with visitors suspended between the two glass-clad towers in an escalator that appears to travel through the open sky. The sensation of ascending through 4 floors of open air between two vast mirror-glass surfaces is consistently cited by visitors as one of the most memorable moments of the entire experience.
The Koji Kinutani Tenku Art Museum is an art museum located on the 27th floor of Tower West in the Umeda Sky Building. It celebrates the work of Koji Kinutani, a leading figure in Japanese contemporary art, through 3D projection experiences, VR commentary, powerful fresco paintings, unique sculptures, and the Tenku Gallery. It is available as a separate add-on ticket combined with the Floating Garden Observatory admission and can be visited either before or after the observatory.
The Kuchu Teien Observatory at the Umeda Sky Building is open daily from 09:30 to 22:30 with last admission at 22:00. The observatory is closed on 1 January and may have special hours on specific event days such as the Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival. Always check the official website at skybldg.co.jp for any special hour changes before your visit.
