New Zealand Rotorua Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland Entry Tickets Overview
Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is a geothermal park at 201 Waiotapu Loop Road in the Waikato region, 27 kilometres south of Rotorua on State Highway 5. The name Waiotapu means sacred waters in Maori. The geothermal system beneath the area extends over 18 square kilometres, one of the most extensive active geothermal zones in New Zealand. The park has been open to the public since 1931.
The most famous feature is the Champagne Pool, a 65-metre wide hot spring crater formed approximately 900 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption. The water is 74 degrees Celsius and the vivid orange and yellow colouring is caused by deposits of arsenic sulfide and antimony. Carbon dioxide bubbles continuously through the water, giving it the appearance of sparkling wine. Three self-guided walking tracks cover the geothermal field.
The main loop of approximately 3 kilometres takes 45 to 75 minutes and passes the Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette multi-coloured hot spring field, the Devil's Bath (a vivid lime green pond), volcanic craters, silica terraces and steaming vents. Two kilometres away, the Lady Knox Geyser erupts every day at 10:15 am, stimulated by biodegradable soap introduced into the vent, reaching heights of 10 to 20 metres. Visitors should arrive at the geyser site by 9:45 am.

FAQs
Waiotapu is open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with last admission at 3 pm. It is closed on Christmas Day (25 December). The Lady Knox Geyser presentation at the separate geyser site begins at 10:15 am daily.
Waiotapu is at 201 Waiotapu Loop Road, approximately 27 km south of Rotorua on State Highway 5, and 40 km north of Taupo. By car from Rotorua, take SH5 south for about 25 minutes. There is a large free car park at the visitor centre. Most tour operators in Rotorua include Waiotapu as a standard itinerary option.
The Champagne Pool is a 65-metre wide hot spring crater at the centre of Waiotapu, formed by a hydrothermal eruption approximately 900 years ago. The water temperature is around 74 degrees Celsius and carbon dioxide bubbles continuously through it, creating the appearance of sparkling water. The vivid orange and yellow colouration around the pool's edges is caused by deposits of arsenic sulfide, antimony and other minerals.
The Lady Knox Geyser is located 2 kilometres from the main Waiotapu park and erupts every day at 10:15 am. The eruption is stimulated by biodegradable soap introduced into the vent, which disrupts the surface tension and triggers the geyser. It typically reaches 10 to 20 metres in height. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at the geyser site by 9:45 am to find a good viewing position.
Waiotapu has three self-guided walking tracks. The main 3 km loop takes 45 to 75 minutes and passes the Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette, the Devil's Bath, volcanic craters and silica terraces. A shorter loop covers the main highlights in less time. All tracks are self-paced and use a guide map provided with your ticket, available in 11 languages.
The Devil's Bath is a vivid lime-green pond near the end of the main walking track. The colour is caused by a combination of dissolved ferrous salts and sulphur in the water. It is one of the most photographed features at Waiotapu and contrasts sharply with the orange-dominated appearance of the Champagne Pool area nearby.
Yes. The walking tracks are well maintained and suitable for children at a steady pace. The dramatic colours and the geyser eruption are particularly engaging for younger visitors. Closed-toe shoes are required as the ground is uneven in places and can be hot near the vents. Children should stay on the marked paths at all times.
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours at Waiotapu. The main loop track takes around 60 to 75 minutes. Adding the Lady Knox Geyser visit (at the separate site 2 km away) adds 30 to 45 minutes. If you plan to watch the geyser, arrive at 9:45 am and then proceed to the main park immediately after.
