Casa Vicens was designed in 1883 by Antoni Gaudi as his first significant commission, a summer house for tile manufacturer Manuel Vicens in the then-independent village of Gracia. Gaudi was 31 years old when he began it. Casa Vicens did not look like any previous building in Barcelona and marked the beginning of the architectural revolution that would culminate in the Sagrada Familia.

The building draws heavily on Islamic architecture from Andalusia and the Maghreb as well as Japanese design, combining these influences with Catalan craft traditions in a way that was entirely original. The exterior is covered in green and white marigold ceramic tiles interleaved with red brick in checkerboard patterns that completely replace the conventional plastered facade. The iron railings are cast as palm leaves in three-dimensional botanical precision that had never been seen in Catalan ironwork.

The interior reveals a smoking room in Moorish style with a stalactite ceiling and wooden panelling, a dining room with painted birds and flower motifs, and a garden room with trompe l'oeil wall paintings. The house was a private residence until 2014 when it was purchased and fully restored as a museum. Since 2005 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 2026 is the Gaudi centenary year and Casa Vicens shows where his architectural vision first took form.
