Montjuic Castle was built in 1640 and substantially expanded in the 18th century. Through the centuries it was used repeatedly as a military prison and as a base from which central Spanish forces bombarded Barcelona during conflicts. Under Franco's dictatorship after the Spanish Civil War its dungeons were used for imprisonment and execution of political opponents, most notably the execution of Lluis Companys, President of Catalonia, in the castle moat in October 1940. The castle was donated to the city in 1945 and transferred to the Ajuntament de Barcelona in 2008.

The most scenic route is Metro L2 or L3 to Paral-lel station, then the Montjuic Funicular (included in the standard metro fare) up the hillside to the Parc de Montjuic cable car station, followed by the Teleferico cable car to the castle summit.
