Palau Guell Barcelona Entry Tickets Overview
Palau Guell was built between 1886 and 1890 by Antoni Gaudi for his patron Eusebi Guell, one of the most powerful industrialists in Catalonia. It was Gaudi's first major public commission and the building that established his reputation as an architect of extraordinary originality. The palace is located at Carrer Nou de la Rambla 3-5, one block from Las Ramblas in the Raval neighbourhood.
The building introduces structural and spatial ideas that Gaudi would develop throughout his career. The facade features two enormous parabolic arched gateways in iron through which carriages originally passed into the ground floor stables. The central hall rises six storeys through the full height of the building to a parabolic dome perforated with hexagonal and circular openings that allow natural light to descend through the building's core. The effect when light falls through the dome is one of the most beautiful interior spatial experiences in any building in Spain.
The rooftop is equally remarkable. Twenty chimneys and ventilation towers are wrapped in multicoloured ceramic fragments in compositions that prefigure the warrior chimneys of La Pedrera by two decades. The rooftop of Palau Guell is the first full statement of the mosaic-covered sculptural approach that would define Gaudi's later buildings. The building is closed on non-holiday Mondays. September 11 and September 24 are free Open Door days.
