Every cruise is led by a volunteer docent trained and certified by the Chicago Architecture Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to public architecture education. The First Lady dock is located at the southeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Drive, 112 East Wacker Drive, Chicago. Look for the black awning at the stairway entrance leading down to the river level. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure time. Discounted parking for up to 4 hours is available at the 111 East Wacker Drive parking garage with validation from the CAC box office or the dockside box office. The dock is accessible by CTA Blue Line to Washington Station or Red Line to Lake Station, both within a few minutes walk.

The cruise is not recommended for children under 12. Infants require a purchased ticket alongside an adult ticket. For families with older children and teenagers who have an interest in architecture, history, or cities, the cruise is a strong choice. The 90-minute standing and seated outdoor format is manageable for most older children, and the visual experience of the city from the river is genuinely striking at any age. Sunglasses, a hat or cap, and a light jacket or layer are strongly recommended regardless of the outdoor temperature. Waterproof layers are advisable on overcast or unpredictable days. The cruise season runs from late March through mid-November, with multiple departures daily. In spring and fall the cruise typically operates from mid-morning through early evening. Summer brings the fullest schedule with the earliest and latest departures including popular evening twilight cruises. The cruise does not operate through the winter months. Advance booking is strongly recommended for summer weekends, evening departures, and holiday periods as popular time slots frequently sell out.

The cruise covers more than 50 buildings across all three branches of the Chicago River. Major landmarks discussed include Willis Tower, the John Hancock Center, 333 West Wacker Drive, Marina City, the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, the Merchandise Mart, the Lyric Opera, the Aqua Tower, Navy Pier, and numerous other buildings spanning Chicago's architectural history from the 19th century Chicago School through contemporary design.
