Garfield Park Conservatory Chicago Entry Overview
The Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the largest and most beautiful botanical conservatories in the United States. Designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen and opened in 1908 it covers approximately 12 acres of indoor and outdoor gardens in the Garfield Park neighbourhood on Chicago's West Side. It is free to enter, free to park and has been welcoming visitors as a public institution for over 115 years.
The conservatory is organised into eight distinct indoor rooms, each maintaining the specific temperature, humidity and light conditions of the plant communities it holds. The Palm House contains a towering collection of tropical palms and cycads. The Fernery holds an extraordinary range of fern species in a humid rainforest environment. The Aroid House features members of the Araceae family, including philodendrons, anthuriums and the dramatic titan arum. The Desert House holds cacti and succulents from arid environments around the world. The Show House holds changing seasonal displays of flowering plants.
Jensen described the conservatory as "landscape art under glass" and designed the interior spaces to feel like natural environments. The naturalistic planting philosophy set it apart from the formal botanical gardens of its era. The outdoor gardens across 10 acres add seasonal plantings and walking paths. It is closed Monday and Tuesday.
