The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has been at the forefront of contemporary art since its founding in 1967. Located at 220 East Chicago Avenue, one block east of the Magnificent Mile and two blocks from Lake Michigan, it occupies a purpose-built building designed by German architect Josef Paul Kleihues that opened in 1996. The institution is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the world.

The permanent collection holds over 3700 works focusing on art produced since 1945. Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Mark Rothko, Jenny Holzer, Banksy and Anish Kapoor are among the artists represented. The collection covers painting, sculpture, graphic design, photography, video and new media across a broad chronological range of post-war movements from Abstract Expressionism through to the present. The rooftop sculpture garden adds outdoor works with views of the Chicago skyline.

The exhibition programme rotates frequently with ambitious shows covering both established artists and emerging voices. The MCA also presents live performance, theatre, film and educational programming as part of its mission to treat contemporary art as an active rather than passive cultural form. Illinois residents receive free admission on Tuesdays. Friday evenings also extend to 9 pm with the free Tuesday access running from 10 am. Children under 18 are always free.
