USA New York American Museum of Natural History Entry Tickets Overview

The American Museum of Natural History was founded in 1869 and opened at its current location on Central Park West at 79th Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in 1877. One of the great natural history museums on earth, it draws over 5 million visitors annually to its campus of 27 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, three research libraries, and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, a dramatic glass cube housing the Hayden Planetarium sphere that is one of the most striking pieces of architectural design in New York City.

The permanent collection contains over 33 million specimens and artifacts across the natural sciences, anthropology, and human cultures. The Fossil Halls on the fourth floor are the most celebrated permanent galleries, housing the largest collection of real dinosaur fossils on display anywhere in the world including the complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, the titanosaur measuring 122 feet and so large it extends through a hole in the wall into the adjacent gallery, and Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus, and dozens of further dinosaur species. The newly acquired Apex Stegosaurus fossil displayed in the entrance to the Fossil Halls is the most complete Stegosaurus skeleton ever discovered.

The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life houses the suspended 94-foot life-size blue whale model that has been one of the museum's most beloved icons since 1969. The Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals showcase the Star of India, the largest star sapphire in the world at 563 carats, and the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems. The Hall of Meteorites contains four meteorites, including the Cape York meteorite weighing over 34 tons. The Rose Center for Earth and Space and Hayden Planetarium offer separate ticketed Space Shows.

The museum is hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 watch parties in June and July 2026 with extended evening hours during match events. General admission is included in your ticket; ticketed special exhibitions (Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium, Invisible Worlds immersive experience, Hayden Planetarium Space Shows, and Impact: The End of the Age of Dinosaurs) require add-on tickets purchased with or separately from your general admission. New York State residents pay what they wish for general admission with valid ID.
