Brooklyn Bridge Walking Tour Tickets Overview
The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883 as the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first to use steel wire cables. Stretching 1.83 kilometres across the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn it took 14 years to build, claimed 27 lives including its chief engineer John Roebling, and was considered so far beyond the possible that many believed it could not be completed. It remains one of the great engineering achievements of the 19th century.
The pedestrian walkway runs the full length of the bridge above the vehicle lanes and is free and open to all 24 hours a day. The walk from City Hall Park in Manhattan to DUMBO in Brooklyn takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes at a relaxed pace. The views from the centre of the bridge in both directions are among the most photographed in New York: Manhattan's skyscrapers to the west and the Brooklyn waterfront to the east both reveal themselves as the bridge towers rise above you.
Guided tours add engineering and historical context that transforms the walk into an understanding of what it took to build. The Gothic towers, diagonal cables and caissons sunk into the riverbed are all part of a story guided tours tell well.

Walking from City Hall Park in Manhattan to the Brooklyn waterfront at DUMBO takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes at a relaxed pace. The bridge is 1.83 kilometres long.
The best views are from the centre span. Looking west you see the lower Manhattan skyline with One World Trade Center in the foreground. Looking east you see the Brooklyn waterfront and the older brick buildings of DUMBO below the Manhattan Bridge in the background.
Early morning before 9 am is the least crowded time and offers the best eastward light on the Manhattan skyline. Sunset from the bridge looking west across the city is one of the most spectacular views in New York. Avoid midday in summer when heat and crowds are at their peak.
Yes. The walkway is safe and well-maintained. Cyclists share the outer lane and move quickly so pedestrians should stay on their designated side of the walkway and be aware of bicycles approaching from behind.
DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It is a neighbourhood in Brooklyn directly below the Brooklyn Bridge with converted warehouse buildings, independent shops, restaurants and galleries. The view of the Manhattan skyline framed between the bridge towers from Washington Street is one of the most photographed in New York.
From Manhattan start at City Hall Park and walk east on the walkway ramp. From Brooklyn start at the DUMBO waterfront or take the A or C subway to High Street station. By subway from Manhattan take the 4, 5 or 6 to Brooklyn Bridge City Hall station.
The bridge was designed by John A. Roebling who died before construction was complete. His son Washington Roebling took over and supervised most of the construction from his apartment after being disabled by decompression sickness. His wife Emily oversaw daily operations and was the first to cross the completed bridge in 1883.
