The Intrepid Museum is moored at Pier 86 on the Hudson River at 46th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The USS Intrepid is one of the largest and most storied aircraft carriers ever built: a 45000-ton Essex-class carrier commissioned in 1943 that survived five kamikaze attacks and a torpedo strike during the Second World War, recovered Mercury and Gemini astronauts from the Atlantic Ocean and served as a Cold War intelligence platform before its decommissioning in 1974.
The flight deck, the size of three football fields, is covered with more than 25 authentic military aircraft including the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, an A-12 Blackbird supersonic reconnaissance aircraft and several early jet fighters from the post-war period. The Space Shuttle Pavilion on the pier holds Enterprise, the prototype space shuttle orbiter used for atmospheric testing in 1977, which is the only Space Shuttle orbiter on public display on the East Coast.
The submarine USS Growler is moored alongside the carrier and is the world's only publicly accessible submarine that carried nuclear weapons during its Cold War service. The hangar deck of the Intrepid holds Concorde, the world's fastest commercial airliner, as well as interactive exhibits and the Exploreum STEM learning space. Certain sections have scheduled maintenance closures in September so check the official visitor information before your visit.
