Skydeck Chicago occupies the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, formerly Sears Tower, at 1353 feet above the street. When it opened in 1974 the Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world. Skydeck remains the highest observation deck in the United States drawing more than 1.7 million visitors each year.
The defining experience is The Ledge. Three glass-floored balconies extend 4.3 feet beyond the face of the building on the 103rd floor, each large enough for a small group. Standing on The Ledge the glass floor gives an unmediated view straight down 1353 feet to the Chicago streets. The combination of the lateral view across the city and the downward glass perspective creates the most visceral observation experience of any deck in the United States.
The 360-degree view from the 103rd floor covers the full Chicago grid to the horizon. Lake Michigan fills the eastern view with Indiana visible across the water on clear days. Wisconsin is visible to the north. Michigan and Indiana are visible to the east and south. The Chicago River winds through the downtown grid and the lakefront parks form a green edge between the city and the lake. High-speed lifts ascend 103 floors in approximately 60 seconds. Saturday opens at 8:30 am for the best early light.
