The Monsoon Trekking Edition, Meghalaya Highlights
The Monsoon Trekking Edition, Meghalaya Overview
Meghalaya in the monsoon is unlike anywhere else in India. The Abode of Clouds earns its name in full between June and September, when every hillside runs with silver streams, waterfalls roar at their loudest and the living root bridges disappear into a canopy of wet green. This 6-day monsoon trekking circuit is built specifically for travellers who want to experience Meghalaya at its most dramatic, pairing the iconic sites with less-visited gems that reward those willing to lace up their boots and get into the landscape rather than just look at it from a viewpoint.
The itinerary moves from Shillong to the pre-dawn Nongjrong Sea of Clouds, through the fossil-rich passages of Arwah Cave, past the thundering Nohkalikai and Wei Sawdong falls, down into the Nongriat valley for the legendary Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek, and into the adventure village of Mawlyngbna for a river trek, kayaking on Umkhakoi Lake and cliff jumping. The final day adds Laitlum Canyon, a sweeping gorge viewpoint above Shillong, before the drive back to Guwahati. Five nights split between Shillong and Cherrapunji hotels keep the logistics simple while placing you close to each day's action. This is the Meghalaya trip for people who want to feel the place under their feet, not just in their photographs.

Yes, this itinerary is designed specifically for the monsoon months of June to September, when Meghalaya's waterfalls are at full force, the forests are at their richest green and the living root bridges look their most dramatic. Travellers should be comfortable with wet trails and some rain.
The package includes hotel stays throughout: two nights in Cherrapunji and three nights in Shillong, all on double or triple sharing basis. There are no camping nights on this circuit.
Pack waterproof trekking shoes or boots with solid grip, a rain jacket or poncho, quick-dry clothing, a small towel, personal medication, sunscreen, a day backpack and a government-issued photo ID. Avoid cotton for trekking days as it stays wet and heavy.
Laitlum, meaning End of Hills in Khasi, is a dramatic canyon viewpoint near Shillong where the terrain drops sharply into a vast valley of layered hills. It is most striking in the monsoon when mist fills the gorge and the surrounding hills are a deep, saturated green.
Nongjrong is a hilltop viewpoint near Shillong where on clear mornings the valley below fills with a rolling sea of clouds while you stand in sunshine above it. On this circuit, you drive there at 2:00 AM to arrive before dawn. The spectacle is weather-dependent.
The trek involves descending and climbing back approximately 3,300 steps and takes around five to six hours as a round trip. It is moderately strenuous. Good waterproof footwear with grip is essential, particularly in the monsoon when steps can be slippery.
