Turkey Unveiled Highlights
Turkey Unveiled Overview
Istanbul is a city that earns every superlative thrown at it. The old city sits on a peninsula bounded by the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara, dense with monuments that have survived empires. Hagia Sophia spent nearly a thousand years as the largest cathedral in the world before becoming a mosque. The Blue Mosque rises directly across the square with six minarets, its interior lined with over twenty thousand hand-painted Iznik tiles. Topkapi Palace governed the Ottoman Empire for four centuries and today holds a collection of Islamic relics, imperial jewels, and ceremonial objects that fills entire wings. The Grand Bazaar has been trading since the fifteenth century and still draws visitors into a labyrinth of over four thousand shops.
The Bosphorus is the corridor through which all of this history flowed. An evening dinner cruise on this waterway is one of the most evocative experiences the city offers, the skyline of domes and minarets lit against the dark water, the continents visible on either side. It sets the tone for the entire trip.
Cappadocia is the result of volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, the soft rock carved by erosion into the formations now known as fairy chimneys. The region's early Christian communities cut entire cities into the rock, building churches decorated with frescoes that survived underground for centuries. Goreme Open Air Museum holds the finest concentration of these cave churches and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kaymakli Underground City descends eight levels below the surface through tunnels once used to hide entire communities from invaders. The landscape above ground shifts constantly, from the pink rock of Rose Valley to the moonlike surface of Devrent Valley.
Antalya anchors the southern coast of Turkey on the Mediterranean. The old city of Kaleici preserves its Roman and Ottoman layers intact, Hadrian's Gate standing at the entrance exactly as it was built for a Roman emperor's visit. The Duden Waterfalls are genuinely dramatic, the upper falls accessible within the city and the lower falls pouring directly off a coastal cliff into the sea. Three days here feel earned after the intensity of Istanbul and Cappadocia.
Turkey Unveiled Itinerary
A cab meets you at Istanbul Airport and drives you to your hotel. Check in and freshen up. In the evening, a transfer takes you to Eminonu Harbour where a Bosphorus Dinner Cruise sets off through the waterway that divides Europe and Asia. The illuminated skyline of Istanbul passes on both sides as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the palaces of the Ottoman sultans come into view. Dinner and soft drinks are served on board. A cab brings you back to the hotel for an overnight stay.
A shared coach picks you up for a full day across the old city. Hagia Sophia opens the day, its vast interior carrying fifteen centuries of history in a single space where Byzantine mosaics and Ottoman calligraphy coexist. The Blue Mosque stands directly across the Sultanahmet square, its six minarets and twenty thousand Iznik-tiled interior justifying every photograph ever taken of it. The Hippodrome follows, the ancient chariot racing arena that once held a hundred thousand spectators and still holds the Obelisk of Theodosius at its centre. Topkapi Palace and the Grand Covered Bazaar complete the circuit before a transfer back to the hotel.
Check out and a cab transfers you to Istanbul Airport for your domestic flight to Kayseri. Domestic flight tickets are not included and must be booked separately. On arrival at Kayseri Airport, a coach picks you up and heads directly into South Cappadocia. Red Valley opens the tour with its extraordinary rust-red rock formations and ancient rock-cut churches carved into the cliff faces. Gulludere, the Rose Valley, follows with its softer pink tones. Cavusin village preserves some of the oldest Christian rock-cut houses in the region. The day ends at Kaymakli Underground City, eight levels carved beneath the surface, its tunnels and chambers once sheltering entire communities from siege. Transfer to the hotel in Cappadocia and check in.
A shared coach sets out through North Cappadocia's most striking landscapes. Devrent Valley, known as Imagination Valley, is a natural open-air gallery of rock formations eroded into animal and human shapes. Pasabag, the Monks Valley, holds the most famous fairy chimneys in the region, the tall mushroom-shaped towers that have become the defining image of Cappadocia. Goreme Open Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserves a complex of rock-cut cave churches decorated with Byzantine frescoes dating back to the tenth and eleventh centuries. Uchisar Rock Castle, the highest point in Cappadocia, provides a panoramic view over the entire valley. Ozkonak Underground City closes out the day before a transfer back to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Check out of the Cappadocia hotel and a cab transfers you to Kayseri Airport for the domestic flight to Antalya. Domestic flight tickets are not included. On arrival at Antalya Airport, a cab picks you up and drives you to the hotel. Check in and spend the rest of the day at your own pace. The old quarter of Kaleici is within easy reach and worth a walk, its Ottoman-era streets and Roman harbour walls requiring no guide. The Antalya Museum holds one of Turkey's strongest archaeological collections if the afternoon calls for something more structured.
A shared coach picks you up for the Antalya city tour. Hadrian's Gate, the Roman triumphal arch built for Emperor Hadrian's visit in 130 AD, stands at the entrance to the old city as well-preserved as any Roman monument in Turkey. The Broken Minaret, once a Byzantine church and later a mosque, carries layers of the city's history in its worn stonework. Hidirlik Tower sits at the edge of the old city with views over the harbour and the Mediterranean coastline. Both the Upper and Lower Duden Waterfalls are included on the circuit. The lower falls are particularly dramatic, the water crashing off a cliff directly into the sea. Transfer back to the hotel for a final overnight stay in Antalya.
Check out of the hotel. A cab transfers you to Antalya Airport for your flight to Istanbul and onward connection home. Turkey travels with you.
