Four Colours of Rajasthan Highlights
Four Colours of Rajasthan Overview
Jaipur earns its place as the starting point for any serious Rajasthan circuit. The Pink City wears its history in plain sight: the City Palace still functions as a royal residence, the Hawa Mahal was built so the women of the court could watch street life from behind its latticed screen, and the Amber Fort climbs the Aravalli hillside with the confidence of something built to last centuries. The forts tour on the second morning continues into the hills with Jaigarh and Nahargarh, and ends with the floating silhouette of Jal Mahal in the middle of Man Sagar Lake.
Udaipur operates on a different register entirely. Where Jaipur is assertive and busy, Udaipur is composed and reflective, built around lakes rather than desert. The Sajjangarh Palace, perched above the city on a hill, gives the widest view of the water below. The Saheliyon Ki Bari gardens and Fateh Sagar Lake fill the afternoon, and the evening boat ride to Jagmandir Palace across the illuminated Lake Pichola is the kind of moment Udaipur was made for.
Jodhpur is a one-night stop but it earns its place. Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India, rises above the city with walls that seem to grow directly from the rock beneath them. The blue-painted houses of the old city spread out below the fort in every direction, giving Jodhpur the clarity of a painting. Jaswant Thada and the Umaid Bhawan Palace round out a half-day that covers the city's full range from medieval to Raj-era grandeur.
Jaisalmer is where the journey changes tone for good. The Golden City rises from the Thar Desert as a sandstone mirage, and the Jaisalmer Fort, one of the last living forts in the world, still has homes, shops, and temples inside its walls. The havelis of Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, and Nathmal Ki Haveli are exercises in sandstone carving that took generations to complete. The second day at the desert camp brings camel safaris, folk performances under the open sky, and the Rajasthan that most travellers come for but few stay long enough to find.
Four Colours of Rajasthan Itinerary
A cab picks you up on arrival in Jaipur and drives you to your accommodation for check-in. After settling in, a half-day city tour takes you through the Pink City's most celebrated landmarks: the City Palace with its royal museum, the intricate latticed facade of Hawa Mahal, the Albert Hall Museum housing Rajasthan's finest heritage collection, and Birla Mandir at the foot of Moti Doongri hill. A cab returns you to your hotel for overnight stay in Jaipur.
A cab takes you on a full-day tour of Jaipur's hilltop forts, beginning with the grand Amber Fort, where ornate courtyards and the mirrored Sheesh Mahal reflect centuries of Rajput craftsmanship. Continue to Jaigarh Fort to see the famous Jaivana cannon, one of the world's largest wheeled cannons, and then to Nahargarh Fort for sweeping panoramic views of the Aravalli range and the city below. The day ends at Jal Mahal, the lake palace rising from the centre of Man Sagar Lake. Overnight in Jaipur. Note: Entry fees to all forts and monuments are not included.
After checkout, an SUV picks you up for the scenic drive to Udaipur, the City of Lakes, as Rajasthan's landscape shifts from desert plains to the green valleys of the Aravallis. On arrival, check in and spend the rest of the day at your own pace. Overnight in Udaipur.
An SUV takes you on a full-day tour of Udaipur's finest landmarks. Begin at Sajjangarh Palace, also called the Monsoon Palace, perched on a hilltop with commanding views of the Aravalli hills and the city's lakes. Continue to the serene Fateh Sagar Lake, then stroll through the Saheliyon Ki Bari, a beautifully maintained garden built for the royal ladies of the court. In the evening, explore the City Palace Complex and its Crystal Gallery, then board a boat on Lake Pichola to reach Jagmandir Palace glowing under the lights across the water. Overnight in Udaipur. Note: Entry fees to all monuments and boat ride charges are not included.
After checkout, an SUV drives you through the Aravalli countryside to Jodhpur, the Blue City. On arrival, check in and rest before a half-day sightseeing tour covering Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India, rising from a rocky outcrop above a city painted in unmistakable blue. Visit Jaswant Thada, an elegant marble cenotaph adorned with intricate carvings, and the exterior of Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world's largest private residences. The tour concludes at Ghanta Ghar market in the old city. Overnight in Jodhpur. Note: Entry fees to all monuments are not included.
After checkout, an SUV carries you across the open desert landscape to Jaisalmer, the Golden City. On arrival, begin exploration immediately with a visit to the Jaisalmer War Memorial, a tribute to the soldiers of the Indian Army who fell defending this frontier. Then enter the iconic Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's last living forts, where golden sandstone walls enclose a working community of homes, temples, and markets that have stood for over eight centuries. Check in for overnight stay in Jaisalmer. Note: Entry fees to all monuments are not included.
A half-day morning tour covers Jaisalmer's celebrated havelis: Gadisar Lake with its surrounding shrines and ornate ghats, then the extraordinary carved facades of Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, and Nathmal Ki Haveli, each a showcase of sandstone craftsmanship that took generations to complete. In the afternoon, a cab drives you to your desert camp at the Sam Sand Dunes for check-in. As the sun drops, head out on a camel safari across the dunes, then settle in for an evening of Rajasthani folk music and dance performances under the open desert sky. Overnight at the desert camp.
After checkout from the desert camp, an SUV drives you back across the Thar Desert to Jodhpur, where you are dropped at the airport or railway station for your onward journey. This marks the end of your Rajasthan circuit.
