New Zealand sits at the end of the world and looks like nowhere else. Two islands, four distinct climate zones, active volcanoes, ancient forests, and fjords carved by glaciers over millions of years exist within a country roughly the size of Italy. This 7-day package does not try to cover everything. It covers the three stops that give you the clearest picture of what New Zealand actually is: Auckland on the North Island, Rotorua in the volcanic heartland, and Queenstown on the South Island, where the mountains meet the fjords.
The journey begins in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city and the arrival point for most international flights. One night here is enough to orient and rest after the long haul from India. The next morning, the route moves south to Rotorua, a city built on geothermal ground where the earth steams, bubbles, and smells of sulphur at every turn. Waimangu Geothermal Valley, formed by the volcanic eruption of 1886, holds New Zealand's largest boiling mud pool and a chain of thermal lakes in colours that shift from turquoise to deep green depending on the light.
Rotorua also holds the Hobbiton Movie Set, built on a working farm in Matamata and left permanently in place after filming on the Peter Jackson trilogy finished. The 44 Hobbit Holes, the Party Tree, the Green Dragon Inn, and the full landscape of the Shire are intact and walkable on a guided tour. It is one of the most recognised film sets in the world and one of the few that genuinely rewards the visit in person. From Rotorua, a short flight connects to Queenstown on the South Island.
Queenstown sits beside Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables mountain range rising directly behind it. Three nights here give time to settle into the landscape before the Milford Sound cruise, the centrepiece of the South Island chapter. Milford Sound is a three-hour drive from Queenstown through Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cruise itself moves through the fiord with Mitre Peak rising 1,692 metres from the waterline, Stirling Falls dropping directly onto the boat deck, and fur seals resting on rocks at the base of the cliffs. The package ends at Queenstown Airport on Day 7.

The flight lands at Auckland International Airport, a cab picks you up and takes you to your Deluxe hotel in the city, and the evening is yours to settle in after the long journey from India.
After breakfast, the internal flight carries you south to Rotorua, and after check-in the Hobbiton Movie Set tour begins at the working farm in Matamata, where all 44 Hobbit Holes, the Party Tree, and the Green Dragon Inn stand exactly as Peter Jackson built them.
Waimangu Geothermal Valley fills the morning with boiling mud pools and thermal lakes formed by the 1886 eruption, and the Redwoods Treewalk follows in the afternoon, crossing suspension bridges between California redwoods that have stood for over a century.
After breakfast, the internal flight crosses to the South Island and lands in Queenstown, where a cab takes you to your Deluxe hotel beside Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables range rising directly behind the town.
The drive through Fiordland National Park takes three hours each way, arriving at Milford Sound for a cruise beneath Mitre Peak, past Stirling Falls, and through the fiord where fur seals rest on the rocks and the cliffs rise straight from the water on both sides.
The day is free to explore Queenstown at leisure, with options including a Skyline Gondola ride above the town, a jet boat on the Shotover River, wine touring in Central Otago, or simply walking the lakefront as the mountains hold the horizon.

The Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown is a full day. The drive through Fiordland National Park is approximately 3 hours each way on mountain roads. The cruise itself lasts roughly 2 hours. Weather in Fiordland is highly changeable. Heavy rain at Milford Sound actually increases the number and volume of temporary waterfalls and is considered part of the experience.
Hobbiton tours run on fixed departure times with guides. Arrive at the meeting point at least 15 minutes early. Photography is permitted throughout the tour. The Green Dragon Inn serves complimentary drinks at the end of the tour.
New Zealand has very strict biosecurity laws. Do not carry fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, soil, or animal products into the country. Declare everything on the Passenger Arrival Card. Fines for non-declaration are substantial.
New Zealand is one of the most expensive countries in the world for food. Budget approximately NZD 50 to 80 per person per day for lunch and dinner at mid-range restaurants. Supermarkets in all three cities are a practical option for self-catering.

Milford Sound cruises operate year-round in almost all weather conditions. Rain at Milford Sound is very common and actually increases the number and volume of waterfalls cascading down the cliff faces, which many travellers consider the most dramatic version of the experience. The cruise is extremely rarely cancelled. Heavy snow on the Milford Road can occasionally cause delays. Your guide will advise on the day.
